Now here's a band that I've been meaning to learn more about for a loooong time.
I have The Wall. I like The Wall. I don't love The Wall.
And that's the only Floyd record that I'm very familiar with. I've heard most of Dark Side and a bit of Wish You Were Here, but that's about it.
I'm sure we have some Floyd (Phloyd?) fans here; which of their albums should I check into? And which ones should I skip? And, while we're on the subject, what do you think of The Wall?

I've heard SO much about Dark Side of the Moon, but I've never actually heard it.

"The Wall" is pretty great, but goes overboard on the theatrical aspects pretty often.
"Wish You Were Here" is my personal favorite, followed by "Animals" or "Dark Side of the Moon". I haven't listened to any of them in some time, and it's a little late at night to play them now, but you got me feeling like some of this stuff.
I've don't own earlier records (like "Atom Heart Mother"), but they have a great reputation for being interesting...particularly the yeard that Syd Barrett was in the band. I also don't own later records (like "Division Bell") because reunions frighten me.

I have Echoes, a two disk best of collection, which I think gives you a pretty good picture of who they are. I have heard DSOTM, WYWH, and The Wall. They are certainly an interesting band, though I think I like them most for David Gilmour's guitar playing. I think Radiohead owes something to Pink Floyd. Dave Gilmour likes Radiohead, and I'm pretty sure Jonny Greenwood likes Pink Floyd. For a first album to check out, if you don't want to go the best of route, try Wish You Were Here or Dark Side of the Moon. They are both solid albums.

Fun facts about Chuck Norris:

I dislike Pink Floyd with a passion. I think they're way overrated. Yuck. I really have a hard time standing their music. I mean, it's not all bad. Comfortably numb is good song. Obscured by Clouds is okay. The Wall is just weird, and I just don't like it. I don't consider it good. I've heard some other stuff, too. I can't say I've heard *everything* from Pink Floyd, so you could argue I don't know what I'm talking about. But from what I have heard, which is quite a bit (one of my good friends is an avid Pink Floyd fan), I don't like 'em.

I decided I would refine what I said in my previous post about Pink Floyd. I have listened to The Wall a few times. I did like it better that last time I listened to it, but generally, I wasn't impressed. Hey You is another neat song and one of the The Wall (I don't know which part) was nice. I definitely think he is making a statement, several statements in fact. I think if I had a choice between them and an unoriginal pop group today, I'd probably go with Pink Floyd. So, I'm giving credit where credit's due. But I still don't plan on buying anything by them anytime soon. I'm definitely not a fan. But I know many people who are, and so listen to them and go for it. My opinion matters very little anyway...

The Wall is overambitious, and there really aren't that many great songs on it. "Comfortably Numb" and "Hey You," however, are fantastic.
I listened to audio samples and read lyrics, and, based just on that, I'm itching to hear WYWH and Animals.

I don't think it's overambitious (because I don't think there's any such thing). I just think that it lets its theatrical aspirations take over too much when it should have just been a great album of good songs, particularly toward the end. My favorite "Another Brick in the Wall" is pt. 3, personally, as I'm not all about children's choirs.

When I say overambitious I mean that they obviously had lofty goals-- and there's nothing wrong with that-- but they were unable to realize those goals very well because of some weaker songs.

My main beef with The Wall is that it is too Roger Waters dominated. Rogers pretty much shut out David Gilmour and the others, leaving us with only his vision. I like David Gilmour's voice better than Water's, though the both do work together to create the bands sound. Pink Floyd's best work took place when all the band members were collaborating. Just for fun, my favorite Pink Floyd songs:
Comfortably Numb Hey You Wish You Where Here Shine On You Crazy Diamond Money Us and Them Time Sheep Happiest days of Our lives/Another Brick in the Wall Pt.2 One of These Days

Roger Waters sounds almost like a Muppet on some parts of The Wall. Maybe they should have renamed the band Roger Waters and the Electric Mayhem...

I love The Wall. Very deep stuff. I haven't heard anything else from Pink Floyd though. Pink Floyd is one of those bands that I love to listen to on occasion, but can't continually listen... but one must listen occasionally to broaden one's horizons.
