I love "Speaking In Tongues". That's the only song I'm familiar with on the album. I had forgotten all about that song until it popped up on an episode of a TV show I was watching last week. I was stoked to see this album in the dollar bin today because of my renewed love of that song! Their live performance of that song opening for Jars of Clay is what sold me on the band. Then I made fun of their lyrics on CMC and ended up meeting Thom Daugherty in person (he had an account on CMC back then) as a result of it. We followed each other's Xangas for a while and I made an effort to support the band when they'd come out this way (I was at the Viper Room show that I believe got them their record deal that resulted in The Chess Hotel being made). then he left Xanga. Then the band went back to mediocre again. Sigh. I'm a fan of The Juliana Theory, but I still don't understand why they were more popular in the late 90's/early 00's emo scene than Sense Field and Further Seems Forever were. I think they're much more inconsistent than those two bands. I never knew they were all that popular in the first place. I went to one of their shows, and even though they were the headliner, it seemed more folks were there to see Something Corporate. Emotion Is Dead is one of my all-time favorite albums. Love is pretty good but a bit heavy-handed. Their first and last albums don't quite measure up. Yes, I'm a fan of Future of Forestry. I picked up Twilight a couple months ago and was very impressed. I wouldn't have been familiar with Something Like Silas if not for my recent discovery of Future of Forestry.
Expect an earlier point in the musical evolution, since the lyrics are more strictly worship and don't explore other subjects like some of FoF's stuff does. But for a band just starting out with a freshly inked major label CCM deal, Divine Invitation was surprising to me. Everyone seems to want to sound like Sigur Ros nowadays, but back then, I hadn't heard many worship bands play around with indie/post-rock textures the way SLS did. Of course there's a good amount of more stadium-sized stuff to round that out, but FoF has some of that too.

I caught The Elms live a few years ago and I thought they put on a pretty good show. What was Thom Daugherty's screen name on CMC? I used to post there a lot, but I must not have realized he was a member. That's a pretty funny story, though. I never knew they were all that popular in the first place. I went to one of their shows, and even though they were the headliner, it seemed more folks were there to see Something Corporate. Emotion Is Dead is one of my all-time favorite albums. They weren't hugely popular, but they did sell a good amount of albums. I think they had one or two albums place in the Billboard top 100 albums. I'm a huge Further Seems Forever fan and I think they are criminally over looked and underrated, so I guess I have a tad bit of angst towards more successful second and third wave emo bands. Expect an earlier point in the musical evolution, since the lyrics are more strictly worship and don't explore other subjects like some of FoF's stuff does. But for a band just starting out with a freshly inked major label CCM deal, Divine Invitation was surprising to me. I'll keep that in mind when I'm listening to it. Hopefully I won't find that Sigur Ros/worship hybrid dull considering so many bands sound that way now. Speaking of the Sigur Ros/worship sound, have you heard a band called The Glorious Unseen?

What was Thom Daugherty's screen name on CMC? PopSensibility, ironically enough. I don't think he posted much. Probably created the account as an effort to utilize the social networking tools available at the time, realized how toxic the environment was, and got the hell outta there. Speaking of the Sigur Ros/worship sound, have you heard a band called The Glorious Unseen? Heard of 'em, but never heard 'em.

Joanna Newsom - Have One on Me
Ah, the downside of vinyl, manufacturing defects. This has happened to me with an OtR record before, too. It's not unplayable, but if I'm buying a new record at somewhat of a premium, well, I have to take it back for a new one.

PopSensibility, ironically enough. Actually, I met Thom once after a concert in Atlanta, and I made a reference to the "PopSensibility" name while I was talking to him. Anyway, back on topic, I got these yesterday: The Rocket Summer: Of Men and AngelsTrent Dabbs: Your Side Now

Days Away - Mapping An Invisible World Lovedrug - Pretend You're Alive Demon Hunter - The World Is A Thorn
I'm pretty impressed with the Days Away album, I'd recommend it to fans of emo influenced power-pop goodness such as Mae.
Not sure why I bought the Demon Hunter album, I don't really like that type of metal all that much anymore.

Basically, this is a 6-track demo CD that came with my pre-order of Letting Go, which I ordered at Jennifer's concert in New Orleans last night. Speaking of which, I will be writing that concert up within the next few days.

Yeah, it was. I was pretty surprised to see it there, too. The case had a crack in it or something, usually they put those in the dollar bin at that bookstore rather than taking the time to put it in a new case. I certainly won't complain about that.

The River Empires - The River Empires - Epilogue
Side project of Jessy Ribordy from Falling Up, which I guess is now his main project after the demise of FU. The music is influenced by bluegrass and classical, so it sounds very different from FU, but the bizarre space-fantasy lyrics are still there. Just look at the track listing for this thing - 29 tracks of obscure mythological references and whatnot. It's like Fangs! on crack.

The Classic Crime - VagabondsHundredth - When Will We SurrenderI am so excited to listen to the album by Hundredth. I usually don't get too excited about stickers on the front of a CD case, but when it says something as breathtaking as "For fans of Life In Your Way, Shai Hulud, and Strongarm" I peel off the sticker and stick it on the keyboard of my laptop. Surely that's not strange at all, right?
