and about 50 hardcore CD's, many of them classics in the hardcore scene. Someone must have sold their whole collection.

I guess Win's lyrics just get really tiring for me after a while - they're an almost constant downer. Not that this wasn't true on past albums (and when I go back, it irritates me there sometimes), but there were a few hopeful songs that provided some solace. I can deal with depressing lyrics most of the time; his approach to it just strikes me as particularly humorless, and on this album, repetitive. (So there's a lot of menacing kids in your neighborhood. We get it.)

But hey, there are 16 tracks here, so there could still be something that I'm missing.

Yeah, maybe "depressing" is too strong. But every song seems to have that "Oh, so what little thing are we gonna bellyache about now?" sort of feel to it. (Kind of like every single one of my posts, I guess.)

See, I think for me, I don't hear any un-hopeful songs on the album. I think the fact that I find them hopeful in the midst of their bleakness is what makes them more resoundingly hopeful to me than things that find hope in a break from bleakness.

I don't understand that, but whatever works for you. I wish I could see it the same way.

Listening more deeply to the new Jars of Clay, my take is that it's like what would have happened had they been in charge of the City on a Hill series. The revolving door of guest artists does give it that "special event album" sort of feel, but having the same core band behind all the songs makes it far more cohesive. It does mean that they gravitate more toward the typical pop/rock CCM sound than their usual stuff, so it's not as good as a regular Jars of Clay album, but it's a definite step above most of the modern worship fare that it's trying to be a more intelligent response to.

I absolutely adore the track "Eyes Wide Open". Such a brilliant way to use three excellent guest vocalists (Powell, Webb, and Delopoulos) to maximum effect, and I love the stylistic spin that Burlap to Cashmere puts on it. Mac Powell in particular can make a recording sound extra powerful when the underlying song isn't the bland suckage that Third Day's been mostly putting out lately. I was starting to mentally associate him with the middle-of-the-road lately, so it's good to have this reminder that he's a great singer who just needs a bit more stylistic and lyrical guidance.

I can't say that I'm as keen on Toby Mac's appearance on "Shelter". I know it's just a little part, but it doesn't fit. This isn't the type of song that cries out for a hype man.

I don't know who Dawn Richardson is, but she's got a great set of pipes, too. Reminds me of Lacy Mosley from Flyleaf, but less forced.

Eyes Wide Open is a good song. That said, I can't really get the album to stick with me the way every other Jars album has. I'm really disappointed so far.

Without it. Now that I think about it, I'm pretty surprised it's not on here, because this is an advance promo copy to an independent local record store. I thought maybe they would have included the song on advance's to non-christian retailers.

It's not being re-sold? Is the indie record store truly where the promo was first sent?

The flow would seem jarring to me without it. "The Spirit Vs. the Kickdrum" going directly into "The State" just doesn't work. (Not that it's anything less than abrupt after "What Matters More", but that's what I'm used to.)

It's possible that it was re-sold. They had a ton of advance release's out there for sale, so I assumed since there were so many that they were the one's sent directly to the store, and they were getting rid of them to clear space or something.

It's the first album I've heard by her and I like it quite a bit. I do find myself drifting a bit at times, but it's usually the lyrics of one of the songs that send me in that direction. Most times I would see drifting while listening to an album as a bad thing, but in this instance I think it means the lyrics are accomplishing their goal.

I had planned on buying Brandon Flowers' and The Gaslight Anthem's albums, but after hearing clips and/or reading reviews I've decided to just download the song that I know I like from each album. I just recently got acquainted with John Mark McMillan when a friend posted this video on Youtube. I was caught off guard, having never seen so many hipsters in a praise & worship video before, but the song is fantastic.
