Just wanted to say I love Rich Mullins' A Liturgy, a Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band now. Well, at least the songs I like to listen to. The album is broken up into two concepts, the liturgy (self-explanatory) and the legacy (his more "secular" songs). I definitely enjoy the Liturgy part a lot better. 1-7 are good and I like 12 now.
Not that anyone cared but you know.

Fun facts about Chuck Norris:
Newton's Third Law is wrong: Although it states that for each action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, there is no force equal in reaction to a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick.
Chuck Norris can divide by zero.

Due to my finding rediculously low prices on them, I have ordered: R.E.M., New Adventures in Hi-Fi Eric Clapton, Unplugged
Total cost with shipping: $8
If you haven't done so, give used CDs a try. You might just save alot of money.

Okay. Listen up. As soon as you read this post, go out and get this album (I mean maybe other albums of his, but I can only speak for this one).... All right, ready?
Stevie Wonder.
Music of my Mind.
Yeah, you know the blind guy. The guy (who've I've read) was voted "the vocalist most likely to make you smile against your will." Yeah, him.
So, yesterday, I wasted a lot of time reading a bunch of reviews at this site, and they were raving about Stevie Wonder. And I thought, why hadn't I heard of him before? Two great of albums of his that they said were must haves were Music of my Mind and Innervisions. So, today, while out running other errands, I stopped at record and tape traders and told myself I would only buy a used CD. Well, after browsing for a few minutes, I remembered that I had wanted a taste of Stevie Wonder. I hopped on over to his section in the R&B section, and saw Music of my Mind, used for 7.99. Boy was it worth it. Stevie Wonder is truly wonderful.
"Love Having You Around," "I Love Every Little Thing About You," and "Keep on Running" are great groovy and funky (yes, I said funky), danceable tunes. Track 5, "Happier Than the Sun", is a beautiful song, I liken it to the Beatle's "Dear Prudence," "Because," and "Here Comes the Sun" in terms of beauty. "Girl Blue" is also poignant.
The man plays virtually every instrument on this album, except the trombone on "Having You Around" and a guitar solo on "Superwoman". He wrote or cowrote every song. His melodies are great. I love his melodies. He has a great voice. The lyrics, though not "deep" (whatever that means) contain some wonderful imagery for a man who's blind!
This will definitely make it to my top albums list. Ah, I love Stevie.
Okay, I'm finished. Class dismissed.

Track 5, "Happier Than the Sun", is a beautiful song, I liken it to the Beatle's "Dear Prudence," "Because," and "Here Comes the Sun" in terms of beauty. That's funny; I've never been a big fan of those first two songs, but "Here Comes the Sun" is my absolute favorite track from the Fab Four. So it's a toss-up as to whether or not I'll like this one, I guess. Today I went to the good ol' used book/CD store and bought a few CDs to give as gifts, but I also found a couple of good deals for myself: Joe Henry's Scar for 5 bucks and PJ Harvey's Is This Desire for 10. Both seem excellent so far, though I've only gone halfway through each one. (Check me out, bloop- I finally heard me some PJ!)

I've alway thought they were all gorgeous songs, but art is subjective, I s'pose. Don't throw out the entire album based on one song.
I also bought (don't crucify me!) Micheal Jackson's Number Ones CD. Why, you ask? Because I've never really given the guy a chance, and some of his stuff isn't half bad. Yeah, it's pop, but he's got a nice voice, and some of it's catchy. Welp, we'll see if I what happens. I'm on track one as we speak...

The MJ CD just got kicked out of my CD player (which is a big deal, because my player holds about 300 CDs, so, things usually stay in there).
A few enjoyable songs. Don't waste your money.

Flynn-Burnt Out, and Brainwash Projects-THe Rise and fall of Brainwash Projects. VERY nice. You're catching up at a staggering pace. *sheds tear* As far as new buys/acquisitions, I've only gotten a couple of long-titled albums: Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social ClubFountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate ManagersBritish Sea Power - The Decline of British Sea PowerHarry Connick, Jr. - When My Heart Finds ChristmasPlus like 10 more that I'm too lazy to list. (Yes, bloop - I need you to sensitize me a bit to the BSP album. It feels like a grower to me.) Peace out, Andree

wow...two parenthetical references addressed to me.
Since I just moved and I'm still pretty busy, I haven't had the time to buy music (also, I don't get paid until Friday). I want to listen to Jay-Z's "last album" (although I say if you believe that Carter is retiring, well, you know what they say about that bridge).

I picked up a trio of new albums today, all of them for good thriftstore prices:
Emmylou Harris- Red Dirt Girl The Minus Five- Down With Wilco And the soundtrack from Vanilla Sky
Emmylou's album may have to grow on me. At this point, it seems overlong and a little uninteresting compared to the masterful Wrecking Ball. Chalk it up to the fact that Malcom Burn produced this one instead of Daniel Lanois. But it's still got some powerful songs and soulful vocals.
The Minus Five consist of members of Wilco and REM, so of course they excel instrumentally. It's much more poppy than Wilco's last album-- very much Beatles-inspired. The lyrics are not quite as enigmatic as those on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but they're still riddlesome and a bit surreal.
And the Vanilla Sky disc has some great performances from REM, Peter Gabriel, Radiohead, Bob Dylan, Jeff Buckley, and a bunch of other talented pholks. Too bad we've heard many of them before ("Everything in its Right Place," "Sweetness Follows," etc.). Still, a good collection. It's worth buying just for REM's "All the Right Friends."

I bought Songs 2 by Rich Mullins, a "best-of" album for my Mom for Christmas. (Does that count?) Quite a few good songs on here, not that I've heard 'em all. Step By Step, Where You Are, I Will Sing, I SEe You, Here in America, Ready for the Storm and Peace are all fine songs (wait, those are the only songs I've heard on this disc...oh well). Where You Are, Here in America and Ready for the Storm are my personal favorites. However, I think I like the selection on Songs 1 a bit better.

In a shocking move, Dv purchases a rap-rock CD! :zoinks:
Yes, its true that I have ordered Earthsuit's Kaleidescope Superior album. I wanted to give the genre one good try, and I have heard good things about this album. If it's good, I will launch it upon Rokran and Harenil! Bwahahaha!

Well in a stunning revelation of my own, I bought an album by the reigning kings of Canadian post-rock (an expansive genre, I know): Godspeed You Black Emperor! The album is called "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven!" These guys seem to get excited about their music, as you can tell by the fact that they append everything they do with a "!" I've only gotten through disc 1 so far, and I can say that it's stunningly rendered post-rock that doesn't sound too much like Slint. Which is always, you know, a good thing.

Btw, I was wondering if this thread should be made a sticky, since it's used fairly often. (Plus, I could have bragging rights to starting a thread that got made into a sticky!! =D ) Good idea. I've made it a sticky, as you can see, so unless Josh has a big problem with it, your mission has been accomplished! And yes, it will be perfectly on topic if you put gifts in here too.

I got the following four CD's as gifts today:
Plumb - Beautiful Lumps of Coal P.O.D. - Payable on Death Dave Matthews - Some Devil John Mayer - Heavier Things
All things I liked enough to own, though not enough to run out and buy as soon as I heard them, so I figured, why not put it on my Christmas list and let someone else bargain hunt, eh?
I still need to review that Plumb CD.

Using one of my Christmas gift certificates, I bought Johnny Cash's American IV: The Man Comes Around, much to the shock of my family. I tried to explain that it wasn't really country music, but I'm not sure if they got it. Anyways, I've wanted to get get a Johnny Cash CD since I heard "Hurt" and "The Wanderer," and I'm really glad I did so far.

love that johnny cash cd. it's top notch.
the only cd i got for christmas was the cold mountain soundtrack, which is excellent (as one would expect, being produced by t-bone burnett). i highly recommend it, especially for fans of americana/folk/bluegrass/traditional music and/or jack white and allison krauss.
it even includes two songs featuring shape-note singing, which i find amazing.

interesting. I'll have to check out that soundtrack sometime. I have a copy of The Sacred Harp. many of the tunes have that modal sound, but regular songs can be written in shaped notes. most Mennonite hymnals use shaped notes since the more conservative Mennonites traditionally sing a cappella. shaped notes make it much easier to read music and learn new tunes, with a shape each for do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, and ti. I actually prefer the shaped-note hymnals for singing, since I like to sing the different parts.
back to the topic...um...I haven't bought or received any cds since the RotK soundtrack. [_[

Thanks for the link, Dv. That's was a fascinating read. I really want to hear some shape-note singing now. I'm all into harmonizing and acappella and the like. Blame it on my traditional, conservative upbringing, which I happen to hold dear despite my now unorthodox ways. Peace out, Andree

Peace out, Andree you can hear bits of the shape singing featured in 'cold mountain' here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id...93&type=productlisten to either of the ones by the sacred harp singers - "i'm going home" or "idumea." both of them feature the parts of the songs where they actually sing the names of the notes. if you go to barnesandnoble.com and search for the soundtrack, you can hear portions of the songs where they sing the lyrics. pretty dang cool.

Everything but the last CD I got for Christmas. I bought the last one on Monday.
Catch a Fire- Bob Marley and the Wailers Pop- U2 Films for Radio- Over the Rhine Good Dog Bad Dog- Over the Rhine Amnesiac- Radiohead MTV Unplugged- Lauryn Hill Natural Wonder (Live)- Stevie Wonder Brother's Keeper- Rich Mullins
I haven't listened to all of them all the way through--most I have. Catch a Fire is nice; I don't understand why ppl think Pop is so weird, it did not sound that weird to me (Wake Up Dead Man is a great song); I love Films for Radio (The Body is a Stairway of Skin is nice little sexy tune); but I find Good Dog Bad Dog a little hard to get into; and Amnesiac's cool, good ol' Radiohead; I haven't gotten through th next two, so we'll see; and Brother's Keeper is nice, but The World as Best as I Can Remember It Vol. 1 remains my favorite Rich Mullins album (and one of my favorite albums of all time).

I just bought the Special Edition of Jar's "Who We Are Instead", and I'm liking it so far. On the other hand, it has a few extrememly low points on the album where they become utterly repetive (but in a boring sort of way).
But I want Sputnik, I tell you. Apart from the Macs (are they retards?)

Picked up Stevie Wonder's Innervisions today. Good stuff. Really good stuff.
bloop: Hey, if I figure out (and feel like doin' the stuff) the Pub hook up and all, maybe I'll put up a song from this album. (I say this only because I know you've got the vinyl version of this and so you can't put up anything.)

Thanks to a very generous pal of mine, I am now the proud owner of Sleeping at Last's debut, Ghosts, and the new live album from The Juliana Theory. The former is a very pleasing debut; reminds me of Zwan, only better. The latter is an okay live collection, I suppose, though I'm not a huge TJT fan, and only a couple of my favorite TJT songs made the set list.
