Welp, yesterday, on my last day of Fall Break I shelled out about fifty bucks for CDs. I got four albums, but 6 CDs. It helps when two of the albums are doubles.  =)

I bought:
Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth by Rich Mullins
Speakerboxx/The Love Below (edited) by Outkast
Ohio by Over the Rhine
Kid A by Radiohead

So three out of four of the artists are new for me. I have yet to listen to Speakerboxx. And I need to listen to Over the Rhine again. So far, I'm really enjoying Winds...Earth. It's my favorite so far. There are a lot of good songs on tha disc. The famous "Awesome God" is on this one. Yes, Rich Mullins originally wrote the song. I think his version on disc is under 3 minutes. It's not the huge, long, drawn-out anthem you often hear. I'm liking Radiohead a lot, too. It's a pretty good album. Very abstract, but it's cool. The Love Below was pretty cool. Not the usual hip-hop you hear on the radio or see on MTV. Over the Rhine is nice, too. Karin's voice is great. I need to listen to them all again, but this one especially, to get the most of out of them. I'll be back to give a bit of analysis and opinion later, after I give them all a few more spins.

Nice buy, very diverse.  Its interesting that you chose to start your exploration of Radiohead with Kid A.  It was quite a departure from thier earlier sound, and a rather unconventional record.  But, it is on my top two list for Radiohead albums, with OKC being the other.

I'm sure this is no secret, but Kid A is one of my Top 10 favorite albums of all time, and it's my favorite Radiohead record (though Dv is right; it's probably not the best place to start exploring the band's work).

And it's also common knowledge that Ohio is my favorite album of the year so far. Masterpiece, plain and simple.

My own recent buy: I picked up the Moulin Rogue! soundtrack for 4 bucks today. Great album from a great film. David Bowie and Bono both sing on it, but, amazingly, the strongest vocal performances on the album come from Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman!

My latest:

Collective Soul, Seven Year Itch
The Flaming Lips, Flight Test (which has a wierdo cover of "Knives Out" on it)
Grandaddy, Conrete Dunes
Sigur Ros, Agaetis Byrjum
Our Lady Peace, Happiness is a fish you can't catch
Foo Fighters, The Colour and the Shape (and they spelled Colour right!)

Okay, so I've listened to a good bit of the albums now. A few spins all around.

I *love* Kid A. What a great album! Radiohead is amazing. It's great modern abstract music. I also like how over time (with each spin) I pick up more and more of their lyrics, and begin to get a clearer picture of what they're saying. Masterpiece. Fav songs (so far): Everything in its right place, The National Anthem, Optimistic, In Limbo (which is really cool because I just finished reading Dante's Divine Comedy!), and Idoteque. But this is an album that I can listen to all the way through.

Winds of Heaven, Stuff of Earth is wonderful also. Only complaint are the annoying 80s-sounding instruments (esp. some of the drums and synth sounds).  I love his lyrics and instrumentation. Favorite songs: The Other Side of the World, Awesome God (although it's better when he does it live), If I Stand, Home, ...And I Love You, Ready for the Storm, One True Love, and How Can I Keep Myself From Singing (the drums are esp. cool). If you're not into Rich Mullins, you simply don't know what you're missing.

Speakerboxx Hmm. Not really a big fan of this set of the Outkast double album. I mean, it's not bad, but it just doesn't groove well with me. Oh, well. Not a total loss, because...

The Love Below is great! I really like this. Whichever of the duo who was responsible for this disc is a hip-hop genius. It's well done. It's diverse. The talent shine throughs. I'm really liking this CD. If you want to get into some good hip-hop, this is the disc to get. I would tell you my favorite tracks, but I haven't listened to it enough. But I can pretty much listen to this all the way without skipping more than a few tracks. On this album, I definitely see how bloop connects them with Radiohead.

Ohio is a good album. Perhaps a great album. They are good songwriters. I'll admit it's not my favorite of the 4 albums. Call me a "pop" boy or someone who likes fast music, but some of the music I had a hard time getting into. However, there are some really great pieces on here. Disc One favs: BPD, What I'll Remember Most, Ohio, Suitcase, Lifelong Fling, and Changes Come. Disc Two favs: Long Lost Brother, She, Nobody Number One, How Long Have You Been Stoned (my personal favorite), When You Say Love, and Bothered. Disc Two is my favorite of the two discs. I can't say I can listen to this all the way through, but I like over half the songs, and that's all I need to be satisfied with an album. But it seems like one of those albums that grows on you. Good art though. This is a very gifted duo.

After listening to Ohio again, I like it a lot more. So, I modify what I said previously. It's not only a good album, it's a good sold masterpiece. And even though I can't say I like all the songs, and even though I like "hit" type music (you all know I love the Beatles), this is a gorgeous album. A simply beautiful work of art.

And after listening to it a few times, I can see why they haven't become big. It's not because it's bad. But it's very artful, and as Linford said--21 songs and not a single hit. There's nothing wrong with having catchy songs and such. But unfortunately, a lot of good music goes underrated because it doesn't appeal to the masses. Even if I rarely find myself cruising down the highway with Ohio cranked (although certain songs lend themselves to this, like "Stoned" and "Love"), I know what to pull out when I'm stuck in the house on a rainy day.

I really like driving with "Ohio" playing.  It's the only time I really feel like listening to it.

I like doing household chores to "Kid A".  It takes away from the boredom factor.

OutKast's album is a driving record, too, for me, but I enjoy just listening at home.  I like both discs actually.  "Speakerboxxx" is a little more traditional OutKast.

Afro, what do you think about Speakerboxx/The Love Below as far as content goes?  I really don't like listening to songs about sex and murder, peppered with swear words, so I'm curiuos about this.

^I'd like to interrupt here and respond to the question as if it were intended for me.

"Love Belove" has a few "choice" words, and quite a bit of sexual innuendo/content

"Speakerboxx" has that "gangsa" posturing, crude & crass language, etc.

In short, if you don't listen to music with that stuff in it, don't get this CD.

However, especially on "Love Below" there are songs with merit as far as content goes.  And on both CD's the creativity and originality is top notch.

Hey, Dv. Sorry for taking so long. Cbluejays pretty much breaks it down for you.

I tend to be in the same boat as you, Dv. For this reason, I don't listen to very much hip-hop or rap. And I don't listen to rock that sits under that umbrella either. This is possibly why I don't like Speakerboxx very much. On The Love Beloww, I tend to skip the songs with a lot of innuendo. I bought it, knowing this, but also knowing it probably wouldn't get that much play on my stereo. One, because of my parents, but two, just because I'd rather not listen to that all the time. But musically, it's still pretty good. And as cb said, there are some songs of merit. I certainly don't feel like I wasted my money, but if you see something else that interests you, you should probably get that instead of Outkast. Personally, I probably don't see myself buying more of their stuff. Actually, if you haven't gotten into Lauryn Hill, get into her *now*. Her MTV Unplugged set is on my list of must-buys. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is an excellent album, with one bad word in it (as far as I could tell), and it's not at all offensive. Plus, it's pretty evident that she is a Christian, and her music resonates with the love and wisdom of Christ. You can't go wrong with her Lauryn.  =)

I recently obtained OK Computer. I haven't had a chance to listen to it all the way through, nor have I listened to what I have listened to with a careful ear. But, it sounds good so far. I think I'm going to like. I've read through the lyrics, too, and I definitely tell they talking about our post-industrial, technological age, post-modern culture. I love the little blip in the beginning of the liner notes.

My most frequent buy:

"Satellite" by P.O.D.

What do you all think of this album, and P.O.D. in general? I like the first half of the cd, but the rest is all screaming, it seems. I like screaming (Some of my faves: LP, 12 Stones, and Creed), but not this screaming. Oh well, I didn't like LP at first, either.

I haven't listened to any other versions or compared them or tried to find out what critics call the best, but I like this version because it was the first version I had heard years ago so it was what I got used to. awhile back I had bought a different version and didn't like it just because there's room for slight differences in the way soloists sing the notes and these soloists sang too differently from what I had been used to hearing.
you can hear short clips from the cd here. hmmm...right now the windows media version of the clips are all garbled and unpleasant but the real version works.

since I have a copy of The Messiah that I don't want, I suppose I could offer to sell it to you inexpensively, but I dislike it so much that I wouldn't want it to be the version that someone else got used to and thought was good...  [_[

Hit the ol' thriftstore today and struck gold. Added four new albums to my collection:

Emmylou Harris- Wrecking Ball. Gorgeous country/folk/pop, produced by none other than Daniel Lanois.

REM- Fables of the Reconstruction. Can't go wrong with REM.

Lucinda Williams- World Without Tears. Snarling, sexy country. This one might make an appearance on my Top 10 list at the end of the year.

Soundtrack from Crossing Jordan. Have I ever even seen the show? Nope. But dang... Sam Phillips, Lucinda Williams, Marc Anthony Thompson, and Alison Krauss, among other fine vocalists, performing songs by Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon, produced by T-Bone Burnett. BRILLIANT. This one will likely crack my Top 10, as well.

So many albums, so little time...

A few of my most recent buys:

Train, My Private Nation (picked this up on a whim at a used CD store on Friday)
Barenaked Ladies, Everything to Everyone (interesting as usual, but not as strong as Maroon)
Jars of Clay, Who We Are Instead (oh wait, I didn't have to buy that one, never mind!)
Radiohead, OK Computer (finally!)

The internet is the answer to this problem.  Half.com, amazon.com used, and many others are your ticket to cheaply buying CDs.  Thats how I get mine, that and BMG Music Club buy one, get three free deals and such.
