Ok, so I've pretty much gotten the rules hammered out for the new never-ending story thread. But it needs to be started off. I could, of course, just make up my own start, but many of you are far more interested in this thing than I am. So rather than risk having it die an early death because nobody likes my exposition (imagine that...), I'll let you guys post some. After a suitable length of time, I'll choose the one that I think has the most merit and that will be the starting point for...(ominous pause) the Super Power Never-Ending story mach 3 mark X! (no, that's not the real title :P)

- BONG -  - BONG - - BONG -

The town clock resonated its glum drone across the village. It was a foggy wed. afternoon, Quite unusual for this time of year.

no the main character is a creepy, but misunderstood hunchback who lives in the clocktower.
that idea has never been used. =)

Yeah, the ideal story starter will introduce some sort of setting, a protagonist, and maybe start us down the road a little bit. It will probably be longer than the usual NES post.

The ancient clock resonated, its dull tones ringing through the downtown streets. The streetlights lit up silently, the tendrils of light suspended in the fog.

Looking up, the vagrant stared into the evening sky. Unusual, fog at this time of year; but then again, everything in this city was unusual. The vagrant patted his coat pocket, where the pistol seemed to shift nervously against his chest.

No, he thought, they're not going to get me. Marcus Smith is a tough cookie.

Someone creative, like Skraps, maybe, should start a story using members of the Phorum as characters.  =)

Ok, the never-ending story needs an exposition to get the ball rolling. I'm hoping that this merry band of reprobates will get their acts together and give me some options. You're free to contribute as well. This is NOT the actual NES, just a "contest" of sorts to find a good way to start it off.

How about a Narnia type story in which someone either opens a door or goes through a tunnel or down a stairway and finds themself in a different world.

Or a time travel story.
I'm looking for starting phrases and actions, not ideas. Remember, the story is created bit by bit from the ideas and writings of many different people. So rather than saying "how about a time-travel story," I'm looking for something like "Raoul stared at his creation. It was finally complete: the machine that would allow him to travel through time! Heart racing, he climbed aboard and set the dial to..."

You see? Smiley

Ebert stared at his creation, heart pounding. Finally complete, the machine hummed with electricity, needles vibrating in various dials, chaos tubes glowing. It wasn't a beautiful thing; no, it was anything but beautiful. But, Ebert said to himself, this amalgam of spare parts will allow me to do the most beautiful thing I have ever done.

Time travel. Where it had been his childhood fascination, his adolescent dream, it was his adult reality. He stepped into the machine like a man stepping into a space shuttle; pulse throbbed in his wrist, resounded in his chest. He activated the containment shielding, hands trembling, and almost before the crackling electrical field spread, he chose his timeframe, set the dial, and pressed the red button...

ps: a little homage to The Imagination Station there Smiley

...and nothing happened.  Nothing, except that a butterfly landed on the windshield.
"Curses," Ebert cried, "Curses to this red button, this machine, that butterfly, and the butterfly's family--and, and--curses to his genus and species, too!"
But then, Ebert thought, "How is it that a butterfly came into my laboratory?  I certainly didn't let that foul creature in the door."
There was an intruder.  He knew it to be so, could feel it in the air.
Could it be his evil nemisis, Dr. Siskel?  Perhaps he was spying on him, perhaps he had already learned all of Ebert's secrets.  His blood pressure kept rising and rising--"This suspense can't be healthy," Ebert thought worriedly--until he heard chilling laughter coming from behind him...

Very good, linds. That's the way that a neverending story should be. Good writing, plot twists, and a little bit of wacky humour (not a ton, just a touch). And Skraps has a very nice starter, there.

It was the strangest sight the South Pole expedition had ever seen, barring the copulating polar bears. They had driven along uneventfully for hours in their Polar Tracker before cresting a ridge and looking out over a huge nesting ground of King penguins. The strange thing wasn't the penguins, however, it was the small child toddling around with the penguins. But as they looked, the penguins began to stampede--if penguins waddling can be called a stampede--toward the edge of the water. The child dove in, and began to swim vigorously toward ice floes farther out.

* * *

He grew up that way, among the penguins, learning their grunt language and wing communications. He called himself something along the lines of "Sqeek", but I think we'll call him Ebert just for the heck of it. It was a bright July morning, rather hot (at least for the south pole), and Ebert has just turned ten. But then, he didn't know that. Suddenly, Ebert looked over the horizon and wondered if there was anything out there.

And, in an amazingly Captain Kirk-like move, he pointed in a direction, and dove off his cliff into the water and began swimming.

It wasn't long before he came to an island...

The sign on the Island read - "Discover at your own risk , because we aren't claiming this one."  ( Since Ebert could read Spanish this sign was understandable to him.

Well there was two Ebert things, you know, just to make it confusing. But yeah, either someone comes up with a super-stunning story starter so socialites seekings sophistication somewhere shall stop simpering, or let's just do this.

The real one will start:
-When there are enough story starters that I can choose a good one (not that the ones so far aren't good)
-When I have time

So basically it's whenever Vlad! gets his lazy butt in gear and does something about it.

Quote

You are free to give feedback, cast a vote, etc. The original plan was that everyone interested in the NES would post a starter, so it would be assumed that everyone was voting for their own. But I guess that didn't happen. There will be no formal vote, though, and it's essentially my decision. Not that we have a whole lot of contestants at this point Wink

And those who have seen fit to continue any starters that were posted (for example, linds' contribution to the time machine one) will be added to the starter as well.
