It seems that my idea with issues was realized through the aid of skraps.  The concept is a site where we can send a song we are enjoying and want to share with everyone, and maybe discuss the song.  I think, in general, the song of the week should be there in any given week to make that discussion more successful (I upped the Bowie song myself), but it isn't only for that.  It's really for anything you are liking at the moment, whether you want to nominate it or not.

I think skrap's disk space is limited to 40 MB, if I'm remembering correctly, so I think it's fair to ask everyone to keep mp3s encoded at 128 kbps unless they are pretty short songs.  Other than that, just about anything is fair game as long as you delete the previous song you uploaded if you want to put up a new one.

For those of you not sure how to take a CD track and make it into an mp3, I or anyone can help you.  I personally use:

http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/eac09pb11.zip
just right click-->save as.  Then do what you do to zip files...pretty straight forward.

For mp3 encoding
http://www.dors.de/razorlame/razorlame.zip
the "front end" program

http://rarewares.hydrogenaudio.org/files/l...lame-3.93.1.zip
unzip in the same directory as Razorlame.  You can use lame.exe in a command line, but it's easier to just use the front end program and adjust options as you need to.

First, use exactaudiocopy to rip the track you want, then use razorlame to encode it if you are ripping from a CD.

If you want to change an mp3 to make it a lower bitrate, then use razorlame and decode the file.  Then select the new wav file, make sure your options are the way you want them, and hit encode.

So, anyway, it would be really cool if almost everyone had something to share.  If not, though, feel free to visit and check it out.  I'm keeping a link to the pub in my signature.

I like that it is for anything we are liking at the moment. Smiley

I use filezilla  but I just thought I'd mention that the link in your sig doesn't work for me.

The link in your sig doesn't work for me, either, bloop.

I'll try to hop over to the Pub sometime this weekend and upload a favorite song or two. Thanks to bloop and Skraps for setting this up!

I don't know why the link wasn't working.  I'll just go for the standard way of presenting an ftp in my sig.  I thought a link should go

ftp://thephorum@switchflood.com:public@ft...tchflood.com:21

but, apparently, that isn't working or at least isn't working for everyone.

good job.

I think mention should be made as to where the downloaded files end up. at first I was puzzled, but then thought they go to the root directory, and only just now figured out that they go to whatever folder is showing in the left pane. now that I know this, it seems obvious, but it's just not what I was used to.

Thanks.

The reason that I suggested the use of drag and drop rather than selecting 'download' was to avoid this confusion...symbolically dragging the file to the folder in question makes it easier to understand how that folder is where the file ended up. But yes, make sure you know where on your hard drive you are when you download, so you don't wonder where the file wound up.

One issue I have with the interface is that it doesn't allow easy access to the desktop. I like to download directly to the desktop and then sort and categorize from there. For you who, like me, follow this practice, on your Windows drive (usually C:), go to \documents and settings\[your user name]\Desktop. So I have Windows installed on drive D, so I go to d:\Documents and Settings\Nathan Baker\Desktop. This is, of course, a Windows NT/2000/XP thing. Those of you using the crappier Microsoft OSes should go to \Windows\Desktop or something obscene like that (not that the other way is particularly nice...).

sorry...it has my name on it, doesn't it?

it's a big file but it is 16 minutes long. delete it if it is too big. I love it though and bought a cd just to get that one piece.

Well, I put up my new song of the week early - a Sonic Youth classic of the late 80s (from the album Daydream Nation).  Enjoy!

(I'm downloading schill's current song.  I'm glad I got that guitar song in time.  Anyway, schill really likes the Swingle Singers.  I find them very pleasant to listen to, so thanks for sharing them)

I'm currently downloading the newer stuff.

(glad you're enjoying the guitar song and the Swingle Singers, bloop.   =)  I've been hoping to get at least one person interested in the Swingle Singers' music. I'll be putting more of their stuff on the pub.)

Man, when I was at a friends' apartment today I thought of a great song to put up there, but now that I'm back I can't remember what it was

When I figure it out, I'll put up something better than 'When Worlds Collide.' I like 'Supernova Goes Pop' by PM5000 at least as well, but you really have to listen to the intro track first to get the full effect. That's what clinches the album for me.

I just put LA Symphony's "Champion Birdwatchers" on there...don't expect this to be a "deep" song with a lot of meaning...it's simply a fun song.  I think it's also safe to say you've never heard a hip hop song quite like it before...not only with the music, but the lyrics...guys actually get rejected by girls?  they actually use hapless pick up lines (I'm wondering if you got wings, you're looking fly)?  I thought they were all "pimps" who could get with any girl they wanted...

Just upped a PJ Harvey duet with Thom Yorke.  I hope y'all like it.

Also, Kutless's "Treason" for murlough.  This one doesn't get my endorsement.

Thanks, bloop. Now my curiosity has been sated. It's tolerable by Kutless standards, but I'm not foaming at the mouth over it or anything.

I just uploaded a song that hits all too close to home right now... Vienna Teng's "Between".

You could do it via PM, if you'd like.

She's from Northern California, specifically. I first heard her live - another indie artist I liked was opening for her. It was just her and a piano, and it was captivating.

I think you can still a get a few more of her songs in full mp3 form from http://www.viennateng.com, plus clips of whatever you can't download in full. In my humble opinion, Vienna's music blows Sarah MacLachlan out of the water.

The "Between" song you put on the pub is most certainly a winner.  Thanks for the further info, I'll have to look into her more.

Hey, glad you guys are enjoying "Between". It's actually my #2 favorite on the album (#1 being "The Tower", though composition-wise that one's a little more straightforward, hence why I went for the jugular with a more musically intricate song).

I really like it when artists compose melodies in such a way that they pull of unexpected but gorgeous chord progressions, instead of staying in the whole 1, 4, 5 (and occasional minor key variations) mode. There's only so much you can do with G, C, D.

I upped British Sea Power's "Something Wicked".  Not noisy, like some of their others - just a good pop/rock song.  I also deleted Kutless' "Treason", just because I felt obligated to not have three songs up there.

Oh, can I ask that people keep their MP3s down to 128kbit? I notice a few that are somewhere in the range of 192. While the listening is a lot nicer, the file size is a bit to ginormous. Thanks, yall.

It gets that way at times. It's grown on me. I don't mind constant loudness as long as there's something musically/melodically interesting going on. There are a few tracks that come across as a bit bland despite how aggressive they are, and the two "mellower" tracks aren't really standouts either.

I think matters would improve greatly if John Cooper could sing without sounding like he was gargling nails. It works on some of the heavier songs, but hearing it through the entire album is a bit much.

Anyway, I just posted my review and these are all leftover thoughts from that.

Yeah, I hate to say it, but I actually prefer Chester Bennington, vocally speaking. Though Skillet is still better overall.
