Someone should upload the original to "There She Goes" so I can hear if the vocal slurring is all Leigh Nash's fault or if she's just emulating the original singer (remember that discussion on the old forum?)

incidentally, this song was used in the intro to the Gilmore Girls pilot. at first I thought hey cool, they're using a Sixpence song! I think it's cool that Sam Phillips does some of the music for the show.

it's called "Slim 52" and for those of you unaware of the hip hop scene...
this is a classic "diss" track...
funny stuff...

Interesting. Thanks for uploading it, Schil. I think I like the Sixpence version better, since Leigh's voice is much better-suited to the high vocals and she doesn't have that annoying accent. I'm fairly well convinced that it's "that feeling that remains," but I couldn't tell. So Leigh's off the hook for that one. I think "that feeling that we've made" makes more sense in the context, though. Humph.

Though in the original lyrics, I also believe one of the lines says "There she blows". Which I know is like an old ship captain hunting a whale or something, but in the context of a modern love song, it just sounds wrong, so I can't blame Sixpence for changing it (or not enunciating it clearly, whatever the case may be).

That has to be a typo (assuming you're reading from the liner notes or whatever), because I can't see that being included. Arr, thar she blows.
Although internet lyrics sites tend to be split on the subject, most agree that it's "remains." Some points in the song you can hear a definite "s" sound at the end, whereas other times you can't. I'm willing to concede the point and go with "remains," though some better elocution on the part of the singers would be nice.

Luke Geraty is the guy...he's a Christian rapper on Syntax records I believe...or at least he used to be on Syntax, he may have moved labels. I thought that song was pretty funny 8-) . Also, Murlough, "diss" tracks are a part of hip hop...Some would argue that as Christians, we shouldn't attack our fellow Christians like that, but I see nothing wrong with it, simply because it is part of the culture of hip hop. I mean, I don't think Luke really hates KJ52 or anything...it's just that Luke is kind of calling out KJ, and challenging him to be creative. There are a lot of people who will whisper behind KJ's back, making fun of him for biting Eminem's style, it's just that Luke is willing to go out there and let KJ know exactly what he feels about it..

As if you peeps didn't have enough reason to hate me, I thought I'd upload the newest song that won't exit my head...Blue, by Eiffel 65. I originally encountered this song walking past a dude's room here on floor 1 when he was playing it. Though I just got about 7 seconds' worth, I found myself humming it during class until I was essentially insane. And now I'm going to share the joy with you.

wow...I guess I get two posts in a row here. I changed the songs I have up.
Pavement - "In the Mouth a Desert" (my personal SOTW) and Wilco - "Ashes of American Flags" (for Dv - he can delete it when he downloads it, or I can just delete it next week)
C'mon, guys. I know you got a new stash for Christmas. Share it.
*edit* just some feedback, the Barenaked Ladies song is actually very interesting. I have a singles knowledge of the band and I never guessed they could write a song so deep.
The thirty seconds of the Jet song was nice also - very energetic and danceable. I think I've heard this one...radio song or tv commercial, I don't remember?
Feel free to give this kind of feedback for other songs you've downloaded. It'll be fun, like the song of the week lives on through the pub with individual songs of the week. If you don't like a song, flame wars could be fun as well.

*edit* just some feedback, the Barenaked Ladies song is actually very interesting. I have a singles knowledge of the band and I never guessed they could write a song so deep. Yeah, given their name and their bring primarily known for writing silly songs, listeners don't tend to expect them to come up with anything serious. Ironically, I think the wit which makes their humorous songs work is also what enables them to write serious songs that aren't trite. The band definitely has a sensitive side, and I don't think that side has ever seen the light of radio, other than perhaps on "Call and Answer", which I didn't like at first but has become one of my favorites. It's over 5 minutes, so it probably got butchered anyway. Even on some of their older songs like "Brian Wilson" and "What a Good Boy", there's a deeper message underneath the wordplay. I even think there's more to "One Week" than most people give it credit for.

Random thoughts on a few songs:
That Jet song is fun. I saw them on SNL when Elijah Wood hosted. They reminded me of The Elms, just rougher around the edges. We probably have more of these "rock revival" bands than we know what to do with these days, but the occasional song from such a band can be a blast.
The Urban Sophisticates song was amusing. I think I like rap the most when it's funny.
That Pavement song reminds me of Cake. It's the speaking parts, mostly. I won't say anything beyond that, as I'm not qualified to review the output of indie-rock gods.
Maggie B's "O Come Emmanuel" is way too 80's for its own good. Which probably means it was recorded in the early 90's.
Just for fun, I uploaded Nickel Creek's cover of Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger".

...SNL There are still people that can stomach that show. How was that episode? That Pavement song reminds me of Cake. It's the speaking parts, mostly. I won't say anything beyond that, as I'm not qualified to review the output of indie-rock gods. Like Cake? haha. Yeah, I guess it is mostly sing-speak. Very unlike Cake musically I think, a very different kind of music. I don't know how to say it, but Cake has kind of this California vibe that just isn't present in Pavement - I guess Cake just has a "cleaner" sound, if that makes sense. The song is from "Slanted & Enchanted" btw, my favorite album from 1992, even though I avoided them like the plague until recently (I didn't like Malkmus's attitude sometimes). They have kind of gotten the indie-rock legend status, and retired just in time to burst people's bubbles. Malkmus recently went on tour with Radiohead...don't remember if Josh saw him. Oh yeah, and Pavement is another 90s band that is ] Nirvana. There are so many like that, though. Nirvana is an overrated sob story of a band. It can be fun dethroning "the gods". note: I do not hate Nirvana. "In Utero" is a great album and "Nevermind" is pretty slick as well. I just don't understand the "best band of the 90s" tag. Just not so . . . maybe if Cobain hadn't decided that it sucks to be a multi-millionaire and offed himself, they could have developed that far, but even then I don't know. Just for fun, I uploaded Nickel Creek's cover of Pavement's "Spit on a Stranger". Excellent cover. I deleted "This Side" immediately because I already own that one, but it was all appreciated. I also listened to Vienna Teng (love it) and Over the Rhine's "Films...", which I also like a lot, but not as much as "Ohio". NP: "I'm on Standby", Grandaddy On a veritable downloading frenzy are we?

There are still people that can stomach that show. How was that episode? Not bad. It was worth watching just to see Chris Kattan doing his Gollum impression (and arguing with himself over whether SNL was sucking wind now that Kattan was gone). Plus that episode featured Jimmy Fallon's impression of John Mayer. None of the skits or characters Elijah Wood played were particularly outstanding, but some of 'em were fun. Nothing terrible. Actually, the Al Sharpton episode from the week before that was hilarious. But then, I think Five Iron Frenzy and Relient K are funny, so you never know. Like Cake? It was mostly the vocals that make me think that. Though what I've heard of Cake's first album (basically the hit "Rock & Roll Life Style" plus a few other tracks that had amusing titles like "Jesus Wrote a Blank Check" and "I Bombed Korea") was more lo-fi. I'm not a huge fan, but I thought Comfort Eagle was a pretty good album, and they've had a good run in terms of fun radio singles. Pavement seems to me like a band that would be hard to judge based on one or two songs. I've heard the song you uploaded, plus the original of "Spit on a Stranger", and some other song where he gripes about "Time After Time" being his least favorite song. I was on an airplane at the time, so that's all I remember of that one. Oh yeah, and Pavement is another 90s band that is ] Nirvana. There are so many like that, though. Nirvana is an overrated sob story of a band. It can be fun dethroning "the gods". I don't know much about Nirvana. I know they're known as being the flagship band for all things "alternative", so I tend to assume that there were "alternative" bands before them, they were just the main one who popularized it. Maybe if Cobain hadn't decided that it sucks to be a multi-millionaire and offed himself, they could have developed that far, but even then I don't know. At least when Bono decided it sucked to be a multi-millionaire, he did something worthwhile with the money. Excellent cover. I deleted "This Side" immediately because I already own that one, but it was all appreciated. I also listened to Vienna Teng (love it) and Over the Rhine's "Films...", which I also like a lot, but not as much as "Ohio". Some of that stuff, I wasn't sure if you'd already heard, so I sent it just in case (figured I might as well fill up the disc). I figured you'd prefer Ohio to Films for Radio, but I thought you'd appreciate hearing a different side of the band. FTR does seem to make them a lot more slick and radio-friendly in places. On a veritable downloading frenzy are we? Just wanted to listen to the stuff y'all uploaded for me. The Grandaddy song was amusing. As a computer geek, I loved the lyrics, but I don't know if an album full of that kind of stuff would do it for me. Kind of reminded me of a less-developed Flaming Lips. (Of course, all I know of the Lips is their recent output, so that statement could be way off base for all I know.)

The conventional wisdom is that the Lips were terrible until the 90s, and I'll tend to subscribe to that as it's the point the Lips decided to get a little serious about their music, if only a little.
I've never really understood what the hallmarks of "alternative" music is, but I like a lot of it. It all seemed like rock that was just a bit more mature and occassionally somber compared to the hair metal bands that were big at the time of its emergence.

Maggie B's "O Come Emmanuel" is way too 80's for its own good. Which probably means it was recorded in the early 90's. LOL...I think it was actually recorded in the late 80s. I'm uploading a very crappy recording of Sam Phillips' version of "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear". the reason the recording is so crappy is because I connected the tv to my computer to record it. (it was the song during the credits of the movie Midnight Clear.) for some reason I couldn't hear it at the same time it was being recorded, so the clip starts before the song does and then goes on for a few seconds at the end. I don't think the song is on a cd anywhere (I wish it were!) but I think it's cool how her arrangement is in a minor key.

Happy New Year all!
I just uploaded "Fall to Fly" by Corrinne May. Kind of a folky pop song. She's one of my favorite indie artists. Not "indie" in the sense of being underground or lo-fi or anything - just in the sense of not having a record deal yet.

I have been listening to Julie Miller's music off and on for a while now and have also been listening to a bit of the Innocence Mission's songs, but just today I was listening to a Julie Miller song and thought, hey that sounds like the vocalist from the Innocence Mission...and sure enough.
Josh, since you've mentioned that you wanted to check out Buddy and Julie Miller's music and since you've also mentioned the Innocence Mission, I uploaded the song Julie and Karen sing together. I had uploaded a few other Buddy and/or Julie Miller songs before but I guess you hadn't been using the pub at that time. if you want, I could upload them again.

Hey, I like that cover of "Kid A" by John Mayer... not half as interesting as the original, and sort of sounds like a mad grab for some cred, but it takes everything that was creepy and wierd and mysterious about the song and makes it... very nice. It's like what Radiohead would sound like covering The Beatles, except the other way around.
I also just uploaded Mogwai's "Mogwai Fear Satan". An 11mb file, but it's worth the download time. It's also a 16 minute song. I compressed it down to 96kh.
Hmmm. Some more observations:
John Reuben's "5 Years to Write" is actually quite good. Much better than his sophomore album and its songs. Nice break in the middle.
I actually don't mind that Kutless track either. Not half as bad as their other stuff, but the lyrics are still cheesy. "Flee in haste"? Oh? Didst thou? Thou wast afraid, I trow? Behold, gird up thy loins and write thee a good lyric. Please.
I *hate* Skillet's Fingernails. What a pathetic song. I hate most of the album. Grrrr.
