I finally go to a church where I can get together with the young adults and have a couple beers.
Grace Lutheran.  Lutherans rule!  I would have become a Lutheran long ago if I had known.
I've been so used to downplaying my love for a dark ale in front of the brothers.
Last night I drank from a glass boot at the young adult progressive dinner.
All of the bad "kicking it back" and "reboot me" lines were used.  The ale was Red Dog.
I heartily recommend Lutheran progressive dinner.  Unfortunately my wife was not as enthused about it.

She'll come around.  I hope.
Cheers to Martin Luther nontheless.

what is so good about beer? I don't drink it; I've never tried it or even been around people who drink it. should I start? should I make an effort to look for a church group that will encourage me to drink?

I want a T-shirt that says, "I'm a Christian who likes beer with his movies."

Josh:  I want that t-shirt that quotes Ben Franklin: "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."

schilleriana:  Beer is great.  It's an aquired taste.  I remember when I was a kid, I picked up my dad's beer and took a swig when he wasn't looking.  I think I threw up all over myself.  I was expecting pop.  But now, on a snowy late afternoon, there's nothing more serene than a good book by a window and a dark, dark ale.

Also this is mainly brought about by this being the only church I've EVER been to that hasn't had the whole "alcohaul is THE devil, followed closely by cussing in movies"  attitude.

I don't see the consuming of alcohol as being a sign of immorality, but I live on a college campus, and believe me when I say that one often leads to the other. While I have no qualms with beer and a book (though I question how much you retain from that book after the first few swigs...), I think the Biblical authors who caution against drunkenness knew what they were talking about.

one of the girls next door to me in the dorm peed on her chair at her desk in the middle of the night a few weeks ago because she was too drunk to realize it wasn't a toilet.

good times, good times.

I live at a university that is entirely dry..    ( no pun intended)    It is allright for an atmosphere, we all leave campus to drink, and if your drunk - You don't come back ( lest you suffer the fires of hell) [make your own interpritation.]     Beer is not evil but   I do believe that Vlad! has himself a doozy of a point ( only cuse it's from the Bible can it be as amazing as it is)   It can become a problem quickly which is why we must keep our actions in line with scripture, and also Guard ourself from temptation as best we can.

my campus is supposedly dry (well, 'permit only,' which means only alumni parties can serve wine) as well. yeah, right.

Virginia Tech is not dry, though obviously you're not supposed to be drinking if you're under 21, not that it really stops anyone. And, as both Bethany and GusX: point out, not only can you not effectively guard your actions when drunk, it's pretty easy to make a fool of yourself (or just make yourself miserable; puking your guts out in the wee hours isn't how I want to spend my weekend). Like many other things, alcohol is not bad in itself. But caution, care, and discretion (as well as moderation) are always good things to use.

The Psalmist dost also say:  "The Lord gives man wine to make the heart glad"

And beer is just basically noncarbonated wine that is made from barley instead of grapes.

I agree though about peeing on a chair, that's when you need to say when.

I say when before I get drunk, but I do enjoy the warm glow.

Actually dark beers would be noncarbonated ones... except for Guinness Stout (which is good stuff) but most of your garden variety beers are carbonated (naturally, I'm told), whereas your garden variety wine isn't.

And there is nothing at all like a beer after a day of hard work. Nothing at all. Ever. But then again, there's nothing like red wine, a fireplace, and a good SF novel...

[tangent]
Maybe (probably) I'm confused, but if dark ale is noncarbonated, where does the froth come from?  Maybe the froth has nothing to do with the carbonation.  For some reason I've always associated froth with bubbles. [/tangent]
