I was just thinking about how we can all be tough critics regarding one aspect of music or another... but who here do you think is the toughest? (Doesn't have to be someone who writes actual reviews, we all weigh in on these things at Da Phorum.)

I voted for myself.
David is a tough critic as well, but I think he generally has an easier time overlooking things-- that is, david and I might both complain about a certain aspect of a song, but he's able to enjoy the music in spite of the minor quibbles, whereas I'm more likely to just discard the music altogether.
Bloop is just as tough as I am when it comes to music, but I'm more nitpicky about lyrics. In fact, I'd say I'm probably the nitpickiest of us all when it comes to lyrics...?

Everything you said was pretty accurate, except I think that you tend to get too focused on lyrics sometimes, as if it is all that is to the music. Maybe I'm extreme on the other end - essentially bs lyrics are fine by me if the music is great.

Are we just talking about music here (I assume so, since this is the music board)?
It's definitely not me. I'd be tempted to vote for Josh, except that at times he seems to be the most exacting and hardest-to-please person on the planet, and at other times he lets things slide that I would consider absolute showstoppers. I'm probably not even qualified to vote, since most of you only discuss music critically and my inability to talk sensibly about music is legendary, but I'll at least hold off until my above question is answered.

Regarding Linkin Park, I don't really see that as pandering. I just figure they're going with what they know. Just because they're older than their average audience member doesn't mean they're pandering to that age group. They could stand to expand their repertoire and especially their lyrical focus... but I don't think they're staying where they are purposefully just to keep the kiddos happy. It actually seems like they believe they're doing something really artistic (if you read the extensive liner notes from Meteora)... which makes me feel a bit sorry for them because there's so much more to be explored, even within their little genre, but I certainly don't think they're being fake about it. I'm just talking about their general lyrical approach. It all doesn't sound like it comes from an adult - it sounds more like it came from an awkward teenager who just can't fit in. From my perspective, that's either pandering or arrested development. The third choice is the one I think you are giving them credit for, and therefore the benefit of the doubt - a failed attempt to pen a deeper idea...maybe?

The third choice is the one I think you are giving them credit for, and therefore the benefit of the doubt - a failed attempt to pen a deeper idea...maybe? Yeah, I think that's it. I realize I should afford that benefit of the doubt to more bands than I do. Conversing more with fans of these bands before I write up reviews could help me... but then again, sometimes it helps me to just go in cold and write what I think, because isn't that how most people approach music, without a ton of prior knowledge about what they're listening to? Definitely Josh. But he helps to keep the critic machine balanced, so it works out for me.
