I just finished the rough draft for my article on my five favorite films of 2003, and it should be posted today or tomorrow. Before I share my picks, anyone else have a favorite, or a list of favorites? Perhaps a movie that you felt was underappreciated? Overrated?
Favorite performances?
Favorite film score?
Is Return of the King going to top everyone's list?
My thoughts will be up very, very soon.

as far as favorite films i watched in 2003, here's my list. a lot of these were ones i watched for the first time this year, though they may be older than that. in no particular order: Lost in Translation Lord of the Rings: Return of the King All the Real Girls Kill Bill Vol. 1 Adaptation The Hours The End of The Affair Cold Mountain Breaking the Waves Boogie Nights Far From Heaven Spirited Away Chicago Finding Nemo Punch-Drunk Love Requiem for a Dream Heaven Nowhere in Africa Elf Angels in America pts. 1&2 LiT is my favorite fim of the year, not ROTK.  |

Spirited Away was incredible, but it wasn't 2003...I know you qualified your list, but it's good to keep it to the right year I felt that Finding Nemo was overrated, but you guys already know that  While 2002 had several releases that I felt were excellent, noteworthy, or otherwise edifying, 2003 was sort of blah. I do hope you at least give a nod to X2, since it's one of the few sequels that doesn't suck... |

Spirited Away was my favorite film of 2002. And X2 didn't quite make the cut, lamentably, though it would certainly crack my Top 10. My five favorites: 1. Lost in Translation 2. Return of the King 3. RotK has to top my list. It's practically the only 2003 movie I've seen this year. No LiT, Kill Bill, or even X2, all of which I wanted to see. Hey, at least I loved RotK.
Oh, and I bought Nemo "for my son" (shh!) sight unseen and still haven't watched it, so I'm looking forward to that.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 (I laughed SO hard.)
X-Men 2
My disappointing movies of the year:[/u]
The Hours (Fabulous acting, really. But talk about DEPRESSING. And what was up with all three women kissing another woman at some point in the movie? I thought that was stupid.)
Chicago (Props to the director, dancers, and the singers.....but I had to stop the movie because I was falling asleep. That's not good when a movie does that to you, I don't care how great the visuals are.)
Master And Commander (Superb visuals...but dumb story and nothing new from Crowe.)
Movies I haven't seen yet, but hope to:

latinchic 8-) nah, i don't think you're totally wrong. i'm just sensitive about it, because i think the hours is a beautiful film, and it frustrated me to no end that virtually all the christian critics labelled it as a pro-lesbianism film. they missed the whole point of the film, and even the point of the kisses between the women. so i wasn't trying to say you were wrong. just more like expressing my overall consternation over the christian interpretation/blowing out of proportion of the kissing. =) |

i'm with bethany on the hours. good, thought-provoking film. i'd like to read the book, too, but--alas--there are just too many books to read, too many movies to see...
on subject, however:
my top five of the year (as far as i can remember)--
1. Return of the King
2. American Splendor
3. Whale Rider
4. Nowhere in Africa
5. Master and Commander
movies to view as soon as possible:
1. Cold Mountain
2. Lost in Translation
3. Elephant
4. Big Fish
5. Mona Lisa Smile (just kidding:rolleyes:)

thinking back and looking over my List of Movies Seen in 2003, I'm surprised at how few '03 movies I actually saw. there are several that I wanted to see but haven't yet, like Luther and the highly acclaimed Lost in Translation.

First, my "disappointing" films list does not mean that the film in and of themselves were bad- on the contrary, the three on my list had EXCELLENT qualities to them. They made my list on my overall feelings regarding each one. I could speak of countless wonderful attributes "The Hours" has. Believe me, I'm a total babbling psychoanalytical nut- and I love thought-provoking films (among other things) to no end. The imagery of the film, the struggling comparisons between the characters, the vivid portrayals of human escapism-it was excellent. The acting and the way it was filmed/directed, was just superb. I didn't know about some Christian critics labeling the film as pro-lesbianism, but it doesn't surprise me. I did "get" the part about the kisses, but had I been the writer of the original book.....I wouldn't have put that in because I still think it was stupid. The act of them doing that- I don't think it would have happened in real life. Again, this is me struggling with the writer's mindset and artistic choices. It has nothing to do with the gay or bi-sexual characters in the movie either, because those situations don't surprise me considering their very rocky pasts, as the movie movingly depicts. Another qualm I have with the movie, and I'm sure some will disagree with me on this, is that it is so friggin' depressive. Although I DO agree that the somber mood throughout the movie is imperative and elemental- it effectively takes you where they want you to go in regards to your emotions; it's very vivid/lucid. But I'm in ministry. And I know how a movie like this can negatively affect certain people that may relate to this movie in one form or another. Yep, the movie is THAT effective. It actually worries me that the wrong people will watch it- people that are seemingly fine, but are dealing with disguised issues they're not willing to confront and therefore may react in a manner such as the characters in this movie. People are vulnerable, fragile. I don't take that lightly. So while it will remain on my "disappointing" films list, I still recommend it as a must-see for all you mature Phorum Pholks. i just received the dvd for christmas, and was reminded about how much i enjoyed the movie. it's just great fun.

Pirates would be an honorable mention for me, as well. One of the most exhilirating adventure movies in a long time-- it has the same spirit as Raiders of the Lost Ark, or even The Princess Bride. And Johnny Depp's performance is one of the year's best, right behind the two leads in Lost in Translation.
