A programming project I submitted over at generation5.org was accepted and posted at http://www.generation5.org/content/2000/box.asp. Scroll down to the bottom.

Muahahaha. The next step is world domination!

Nice work, Vlad! Pretty soon we can tell people that our graphics on the site were designed by Nathan Baker, and everyone will instantly know who we're referring too. Between that and the name-recognition factor with Vlad!, you're on your way to fame and fortune.

Thanks, Josh. I've been debating going by just Nathan on this site instead of Vlad! (it's hard to take a review seriously when the writer claims to be a duck), but you can't deny the humor value in it. So I guess all my fame and fortune will pour in via a pseudonym  =D

Genetic algorithms, why aren't there more songs written about them?  Modern music hasn't caught up with the excitement, yet.  And neither has the movie industry.  Oh well.   Wink

Congratulations, though I'm not exactly sure what you did, precisely...... :embarass:

Fun facts about Chuck Norris:

Chuck Norris can divide by zero.

Michael Crichton did write a book about them called Prey, but I can see why they're not exactly something you hear about every day. If Prey gets made into a movie, maybe public interest will increase. If course, some senator will get them banned to keep computers from taking over the world *gasp*!

Essentially, genetic algorithms stimulate 'artificial evolution,' where each potential answer (called a Chromosome) is assigned a 'fitness' value based on how well it solves the problem. Each 'generation' of chromosomes is 'evolved' via random mutation and 'genetic crossover' from the fittest of the 'parent chromosomes.'
It's basically a bunch of programmers trying to be clever and evolve a solution rather than calculate one. The theory is that, since it's inherently unpredictable, the solution can be better or more ingenious than even the creators of the algorithm could predict.

Anyway, it's something that computer science majors like myself think is really cool and everyone else pretends to be interested so they don't hurt out feelings Wink

I am considering a computer science major, myself.  Now that you explain that, it does sound interesting.  I looked around that site a bit, and that whole artificial intelligence thing does seem like an interesting study.  Maybe you should make an artificial board member, have it post here, and see if we can guess what it is! =D

Vlad, don't tell me you're one of those techies who codes C++ problems for fun! blink That problem reminds me waaaay too much of my first-year programming classes.

Good job, though!

Actually, I do. Even though I'm a professional programmer AND a Computer Science major at a state university, I still spend my free time solving programming problems.  =D

And yet, somehow, I'm geekier than you. Life is like a box of chocolates: it never fits in our pidgeon holes.

Yeah. Incidentally, I don't really consider myself a geek. I just have a hobby, and it happens to be one that's less socially integrated than (say) fishing or golfing, which I hate. So when some of my co-workers talk about fishing or golfing on their vacation, I feel the same way that many of my friends probably do when I mention that I worked on a simple genertic altorithm over my vacation...
