So what are some new releases that you pholks are looking forward to in 2004? I can think of a few:

U2 (March!!!)
REM (Late summer or early fall, I think)
Wilco (double album?)
Joseph Arthur (?)
Lauryn Hill (?)
The Cure

What am I missing?

...and, now that I think about it, I think we can also expect new stuff from Kevin Max, assuming he finds a label to distribute it.

Cool site.  U2's album is probably the release I'm looking forward to most.  Sounds like this might be an interesting new direction for them, from what that site says.

Uh huh, I'm sure U2 will tour the new album, though I can't say when. But I'm not gonna miss this one-- I'll either catch 'em in Atlanta or Lexington.

REM, on the other hand, may not tour as much for their new one, as they just ended a huge world tour in late 2003 and they've told the press that they won't be touring as heavily in the future...

By the way, I read that the new Cure album is tenatively titled Join the Dots.

Edge claims it is their rockiest offering since their early days, while Bono claims the songs are stronger than those on their last, critically acclaimed, album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Which suggests it is going to be something special if, as Edge jokingly but somewhat pointedly remarked, "Bono can just tear himself away from saving the world for long enough to finish the lyrics".

Classic quote about Bono there! Looking forward to the new U2 album. I've been wanting a wall-to-wall rock album from them for quite some time.

It's not gonna release in March.

Knowing U2 and Interscope, it's logistically impossible.

You're right, of course. I don't think a U2 album has ever been released when they said it was going to be released. But this one has already been pushed back quite a bit, so I'm hoping we won't have to wait too much longer...

Hmm...I don't know if I want a solid rock album, but U2 is a buy without previewing for me.  I'll come along for whatever they want to do.

Ah, c'mon-- you know that, even if it is technically a rock album, Bono and the boys will shake things up, put their own stamp on it, and make it something original. I don't think we have to worry about it being typical, radio-ready rock a la Lifehouse or The Strokes.

I just know that there's the U2 that focuses on playing and experimenting with their sound a bit a la "Achtung Baby!" and there's another U2 that just strives at making a good record that isn't particularly innovative, but focuses on a song-based or lyrical approach (see "ATYCLB", which had its share of radio-ready rock).  I'm hoping for the former, but the latter can be very rewarding from this band as well.

I guess I just fear that an older band like U2 would settle down.  I fear Aerosmith syndrome.

Isn't Solar the title of the new U2 disc?

I like that name.

No. It's not. That was a horrible rumor. The U2 camp isn't saying what the title will be, but they say that Solar was never on the list of possibilities.

Slightly deviating from the U2 discussion that this thread has evolved into (not that I'm not totally stoked)...

Badly Drawn Boy releases a new album (his fourth, well, third if you don't count the soundtrack he recorded) in March, at least that's what he said at his concert in November.

Hey, is it true that Coldplay is releasing a new album late in the year?

A horrible rumor...

LOL@Josh.

You're hilarious.  You're making it seem like spreading a rumor saying that Solar is the title is something cosmically damaging and overall terribly pernicious to U2's reputation.

I just found that amusing.

Neither did I.  In fact, I'm not even sure I would  buy the album if it had that title.

Only kidding about that last bit, of course, but I'm very glad it was a rumour.

I've heard that, but, as far as I know, the album is far from completed, so it's very tenative. I strongly doubt it'll happen, but maybe.

I like Coldplay. I don't, however, think they are the greatest thing since sliced cheese and/or bread.

Solar isn't really such a bad name. I would fit in with Glo, Illuminate, Shine, Radiate, Light and all sorts of other CCM classics!!!!

I was a bit sarcastic there.

I don't like it either, but a dumb title generally won't stop me from buying an album.

LOL!  You have made me laugh.

David... I thought Solar, the title, would be right up your alley, considering your laboral affiliations with the celestial.

I can already foresee the headlines...

SOLAR, THE ALBUM, CHOSEN AS NASA'S FLAGSHIP FULL-LENGTH RECORDING FOR THE YEAR 2004.

Peace out,
Andree

I guess I just expect more interesting titles from U2 than a generic, light-related title.

After all, they're not the only ones staring at the sun.

Skraps, Murlough & myself have been acting a little silly over at CMC over this whole Solar thing.  It's now been attributed to RSJ's new album.

And speaking of the new U2 album (you wiley coots, you)...

This just in from @U2:

Quote
Two Italian fan sites, U2star.com and U2place.com have received emails from Universal Italy this week relaying a quote from U2 manager Paul McGuinness that the album will not be out in May, but will instead be out "after the summer." Adding to that, U2 fans who recently spoke with Bono in the U.S. are reporting on various Forums and mailing lists that Bono said the album would be out in September because the band hit a "snag" in the recording.
