Have you ever noticed that the song "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" is a lot like an alegory for the Christian life struggle? Check this out:

"Her name is Yoshimi; she's a black belt in karate"

She's a master of karate, she has great power (i.e. the Spirit)

"working for the city she has to discipline her body"

What city, you ask? Well ZION of course! Her body being a metaphor for faith.

"'Cause she knows that it's demanding
to defeat those evil machines I know she can beat them"

It's a tough battle against demonic power, but she's got the power in her to triumph.

" Those evil-natured robots they're programmed to destroy us"

Demons that are purely evil. Enough said.

"she's gotta be strong to fight them so she's taking lots of vitamins"

Vitamins? VITAMINS? No, my friends: a thinly disguised reference to the scriptures!

" Oh Yoshimi, they don't believe me but you won't let those robots eat me
Yoshimi, they don't believe me but you won't let those robots eat me"

In this sense Yoshimi is both the typical Christian but also a Christ-like figure, able to slay demons, able to save the populace from their harm.

And, in typical Christianphanboy logical pathways, I have deduced that the Flaming Lips are Christian!!!! Take for instance their name: the Flaming Lips. What could this mean other than a backhanded referenc to the prophet Isaiah (or is it Jeremiah) when he has a burning coal touched to his mouth? Hmmm.... makes you think, doesn't it?

But what is the significance of the color pink?

Satan comes dressed as an angel of light. Or alternately, as someone with bad fashion sense.

Heh, I guess this is a good reminder that sometimes songs should just be taken at face value ;]

Yes, but when that face value is essentially nothing, it helps to add gravitas with absurd theories.

Best laugh I had all day.

I always just believed the much-publicized concept that it was about a losing fight with cancer, loosely based on an experience with a Japanese fan, but this works too.

my theory is that "yoshimi" is actually a derivation of "yeshua," which, i believe, is a derivation of "joshua" which we all know means "jesus."

Right, so Yoshimi is a Japanized Jesus! See, all the pieces fall into place.

Also, notice an alternate interpretations of these lines:
"Working for the city, she has to discipline her body"

This is a reference to the Spirit (working for "the city"... ie heaven... ie God) correcting and rebuking ("disciplining") his church ("her body").

Perhaps the line about Yoshimi taking vitamins is a thinly-veiled reference to the Lord's Supper?

It's 'flaming tongues,' isn't it?

Yes, but my way is funnier.

The Christian analogy is starting to make more and more sense... the latter half of the album describes the coming of the apocalypse... "Do You Realize" is about how life is short and everybody's going to die soon, and then there's a return visit from a time traveller in "All We Have Is Now"... clearly that's an allusion to the second coming of Christ! "Pavonis Mons" is an instrumental allegory for Heaven, of course. And all the sinners who don't believe the Apocalypse will come are "Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell".

Wait a minute... that's not what it is at all. Sorry, guys. For a minute there, I must've thought I was Jeffrey Overstreet.

Zing  laugh

I'm going to have to print this thread out and give a copy to all the people I meet who produce these absurd allegories they thing books, movies, or songs are presenting.

The thing about "You are..." being a possible answer to "I am", among other things in that review, was a little crazy, but I don't think he goes overboard on that stuff too often.

On another note, this is one of the funniest threads we've had in music for a while.

Well, you know, an idiosyncracy displayed once is enough to establish a pattern that can be exploited and made fun of.

But then there was my Wilco review, so I guess I shouldn't be so quick to throw stones. Still need to update that one...

Heh... I just read over my review of Coldplay's Parachutes from a few years back, and realized that I had made a major stretch to come up with a spiritual interpretation for "Yellow". Great minds think alike!

(That last sentence was non-sequitur, by the way.)
