I was wondering how all of you approached your Bible reading.  I am currently reading the Bible cover to cover, Genesis to Revelation.  How do you guys decide where to read?  Do you just search for relevant topics to you at the moment, or do you follow a yearly plan?   Share with us.

Once, a Sunday School teacher had everyone pick a random 3-digit number. When we selected our numbers, he then had us turn to the corresponding page in the Bible and read the whole thing. It was an excercise in providence. "It was no accident that you came upon the page that you did," he said.

He was speaking the truth, even if it was kind of over the top. The point I'm trying to make is that I don't have a specific schedule or reading plan. I just open to somewhere in the Bible each night and trust God to show me what He wants me to see, and to give me eyes to see and ears to hear.

I sort of wish I could do the cover-to-cover plan, but my attention span is far too short, I'm afraid...

I've tried the whole providence thing, but when I do that I usually don't do it at all.  Oh well, we are all made different and that includes our Biblical study habits.
I'm sort of doing a cover to cover thing, but I do one OT chapter a day along with one NT chapter a day.  I also do one psalm, one prophet, and one epistle chapter a day.  So in all, at least five chapters a day.  Not to mention the various other books concerning religion (Christianity and otherwise).  What can I say? I love to read.
It might be cliche but knowledge is power.

I have intended to read the Bible cover-to-cover a few times, but somehow never quite got started.  I did find a plan for reading it through in 90 days, which seems reasonable.  I'd also want to read the Apocryphal books that are considered by some to be part of the Bible, so that would take longer.  And if I ever finish that, I might read the Qur'an and the Book of Mormon (both of which I have found online.)  I guess I'd better get started.

I'm trying to read it cover to cover as well, but I've gotten de-railed lately. I don't particularly think that the c2c method is for everyone, and certainly many Bible study plans are designed to help the believer get the most out of their reading without the seemingly irrelevant parts (such as my life verse, 2 Kings 6:29). I have found, though, that even though I'm only in Chronicles right now, I've discovered a lot of things that I never knew before just through my sporadic reading. It certainly does help you get the big picture.

i wouldnt say i have a plan, just for whatever reason, my interest is sparked by a particular book. like last summer i just read through mathew, really letting it sink in. and lately i've been a little crazy about paul's letters. i wish i were more consistent in my reading, but i dont want it to become a "habit" thing, where i do it just for rituals sake, so i read when the desire comes to me.

(smartash, I made your post all better)

Yeah, it's hard to follow a "schedule" at all without letting it become a habit...after I read, I like to sit back and think about what I just read, what it means, and what (if any) impact it should have on my life.

Do you people think that daily Bible reading is good? I've noticed sometimes that reading the Bible before I start my day helps me be calmer and order my thoughts better later that morning, but maybe I'd get the same benefit from just staring at the sky.

I definitely think that reading the Bible daily is a good habit to be in (though the Bible doesn't really say this, does it?). As for when you read it, though, I think that varies from person to person. Most people prefer to do it in the morning, but I usually do it at night. In the mornings, I'm simply too tired to focus.

Actually, in Joshua, it says we should meditate on the Word day AND night! Wouldn't that be awesome if we actually did that.

I'm in I Corinthians now. I just find a book that seems interesting to me once I'm done with my last one. I have never read all of the Bible, and am not even close because I don't like to read a lot at a time. I like to let it sink in cause there's so much packed in there.

When I was younger, I thought the phrase 'do not let this book of the law depart from your mouth' meant you weren't supposed to speak it!  blink
Now that I'm older I realize that it means we're supposed to be speaking it constantly. That's a much better interpretation

And it's wonderful when people actually do that too. Some people that I've been around with are just always talking about spiritual things. It just flows through them, and it's not awkward or forced or anything... and it's awesome!

I usually think about talking about something spiritual and then think, "no, they're probably all sick of hearing about the spiritual side of things" so I shut my mouth.

Just out of curiosity, where does the "spiritual" begin and the sensual end? Just wondering, and we might even need a separate topic on this (start one if you've got a lot to say about it). Because, as Stanton's sig line once read, everything is, on some level, a spiritual matter. God. Sex. Music. Whatever.

that skips all over the Bible and i read a couple pages each weekday on my morning commute . . .
what can i say, God *blessed* me with horrible traffic . . .

generally during the day i'll read the passage from www.dailybible.com which generally runs three seperate tracks  . . .
and then on my own i read fairly regularly . . .

I'm talking about anything from praising God for the sky to viewing a movie from a spiritual perspective. Cause you're right...

I think 'spiritual' can be synonimous with 'deep', in that once you go below the superficial surface and get at the heart of something (no matter what that something is, assuming it exists at all underneath its surface) it becomes spiritual. Relating back to the topic, this is one reason why Bible reading is important--it can help us see spiritual aspects in something that might otherwise seem common or not worth discussing.

I tried to say the right things in the right way, but  simple silence is the only way to conclude my attempt.

Ponderings and then restatements from both sides will cause more of the same.

So remember: Stan, yes, this man, gave his best and is leaving it up to you and Him to do the rest.

You know, Scripture is really great. A lot of people complain because God never speaks to them. Such people simply don't read the Bible, I guess. God speaks to me daily.

Maybe to let the big ideas it contains sink in?

And I hear you about Genesis...I've read it several times in abortive attempts to get through the Bible.

I have this bible that my mom gave me that is supposed to get you through the Bible in one year...I knew I wouldn't have the time to read that much material in one night and contemplate it like I wanted to. So, sometimes I use it and sometimes I just let God show me what he wants. I was wondering though, has anyone happened to stumble on devotions/ lessons online, that I can maybe print off for myself and other friends?
