Sam PhillipsA Boot and a Shoe Coming April 2004!!!And my but the song titles are intriguing... Track Listing: How to Quit 2:27 All Night 4:05 I Dreamed I Stopped Dreaming 1:52 Open the World 2:19 Red Silk #5 2:30 Reflecting Light 3:21 Infiltration 2:16 Drawman 3:38 I Wanted to Be Alone 2:16 Love Changes Everything 3:10 If I Could Write 2:20 Hole in My Pocket 1:25 One Day Late 3:13 Fan Dance was one of the very best albums of 2001; and, indeed, it's one of my favorite records of all time. Top 25, at least. So I'm more than a little excited about this one. It's likely to be one of the year's best albums, even if it's just half as good as Fan Dance.

I have a tendency to check an artists back catalogue before I get their new releases(helps me understand them better), so I probably won't get this one until I get some of her earlier work.

funny that she's finally giving one of her albums this title. I remember waaaaaay back that her second (?) album as Sam was supposed to have it.

Make sure you hear Martinis and Bikinis, Cruel Inventions, and The Turning; the rest, I think, are skippable (though I haven't heard any of her pre-Turning material). funny that she's finally giving one of her albums this title. I remember waaaaaay back that her second (?) album as Sam was supposed to have it. Yeah, I think she almost gave Martinis and Bikinis this title, too.

The release date has been set for April 27. In preparation, I think that I shall go revisit my favorite Sam record thus far, Fan Dance...

Oh my goodness.
Nothing could have prepared me for A Boot and a Shoe.
Gone are the political and social concerns of past Sam Phillips albums. This album is, quite frankly, about the collapse of a marriage.
And it's absolutely, devestatingly heartbreaking. It's hard not to cry during some of these songs.
Musically, this is even more sparse than Fan Dance, but a bit more upbeat. Sam has always been a superb melodist, and this is her most irresistable album yet. I defy you to listen to this disc and not hum or tap your foot to the music. Absolutely gorgeous.
And the lyrics... wow.
I won't spoil too much, as I want to leave some material for my review, but the last song, "One Day Late," is bound to become my new favorite Sam Phillips song. The chorus is one of the most heartbreaking lyrics I've ever heard:
Help is Coming, help is coming one day late One day late After you've given up and all is gone Help is coming one day late
And yet this lyric, from the same song, is one of the most gloriously, inspiringly hopeful lyrics I've ever heard:
But remember That there always has been good like stars You don't see in the day sky Wait til night
I can't put any more into words right now... man this is gonna be a tough one to review... but HEAR THIS ALBUM. It's gorgeous and highly moving.

Wanna bet? Buy me a copy of this album, send it to me, and I'll listen to it straight through without so much as becoming glassy-eyed. You know you can't resist the challenge! Just mail that CD on over to.... *waits for free CD* Seriously, I'm glad to hear that this is a solid album. I rather enjoyed Fan Dance, so its sounds like I will have to pick this one up as well.

If you liked Fan Dance-- and I LOVED Fan Dance-- then this album is really going to knock your socks off. The subject matter is a little darker here, but the melodies are even more pleasant than before, and the arrangements are more lively. U2 and REM are both supposed to release new albums this year, but if this record is still my #1 pick for the year when December rolls around then that will be fine with me.

I felt strangely inspired and published a review, which I may go back and revise as I become better acquainted with the album. Consider this a first impression.

Weird... Looking Closer's reviewwent up today, and it sounds EERILY similar to my own, right down to the use of the same U2 quote. For the record, though, mine has been up since Thursday... =)
