So, yeah read that article.

So, I guess I'm starting this thread to discuss that article and to discuss things in general. What do you guys think about human cloning? What do you think about stem cell research?

Discuss.  Smiley

Ok, first off, I have to say that Woo Suk Hwang is an awesome name.

Alright, with the prelimanaries out of the way, time for some comments. That was a singularly uninformative article, but apparently they cloned, if you can put it that way, an embryo to harvest its stem cells. Stem cells are useful things, no doubt about it, but harvesting them from human embryos just seems wrong.

As for human cloning, well, spiritually speaking I don't see a human clone as being much different than, say, an identical twin. Morally, well, I don't think it's particularly right, but I don't consider it to be an abomination either. As for whether it should be done, I ask 'why?' It's not like we have a shortage of people on our hands. The only reason I can see for doing it is for unethical practices, such as 'harvesting' organs or stem cells.

The only question I have about human cloneing and it as a possibility to create a living creature is ...
How do they create the soul and put it in the body.... ?  I mean, Im not a platonist , nor do I deny the existence of the soul,  but I think the soul is something that cannot be "cloned."

Further, I'm not sure I would agree with spontaniously cloneing people for the fun of harvesting organs.  Just judging by the fact of how poor Dolly the cloned sheep [1996 till 2003] ended up [see note below].  Maybe it is a possibility, and perhaps could have many benifits for humans, I think cloneing is a tool that can be used for the betterment of man / furtherment of creation.. However, I would shy away from it due to the severe impacts it could have if the power got into the hands of the wrong people. [AKA.  almost anyone.]

Any other thoughts ?

Quote
A decision was taken to "euthanase" six-year-old Dolly after a veterinary examination showed that she had a progressive lung disease, the institute said in a statement.
Dr Harry Griffin, from the institute, said: "Sheep can live to 11 or 12 years of age and lung infections are common in older sheep, particularly those housed inside.
Professor Richard Gardner, chair of the Royal Society working group on stem cell research and therapeutic cloning, said: "We must await the results of the post-mortem on Dolly in order to assess whether her relatively premature death was in any way connected with the fact that she was a clone.

"If there is a link, it will provide further evidence of the dangers inherent in reproductive cloning and the irresponsibility of anybody who is trying to extend such work to humans."

This was one year ago... and now, the koreans are "irresponsible" :P

But of course, I could be wrong... [ But I doubt it. ]

Why can't a soul be cloned?
