Switchfoot's "We are One Tonight" was showed, with them singing live, in the break between the national anthem and the end of the pregame show on the BCS National Championship game just now.

Not really a "random" sighting since it's by my own design, but I thought it might be of interest anyway: A friend and I are working on a medley of Anberlin's "Down" and "The Unwinding Cable Car" to sing as a duet for an open mic night at our church.
For the same event, I'm also helping a friend update the SNL skit "Lazy Sunday" to localize it for our neighborhood of L.A. and to tangentially reference the plot of the third film. (THEY'RE ON A BOAT!!!) I'm just a ghost writer - the rap will be performed by two women.

Had American Idol on in the background (I know, I know....my cred is already shot), but Iron & Wine's "Naked As We Came" was the background music for some contestant's back story.
Love when great songs and artists get exposure, even if on something like AI.

My wife watches The Biggest Loser, and i love my wife so i'm in the room doing other stuff, and heard "These Hard Times" by Needtobreathe during a segment just now, and after thinking i was having serious deja vu, realized they also used it last season as well.

I have a couple of basketball-related music sightings. First, during the LSU-Florida basketball game this afternoon, one of the songs the LSU band tried to play was Robert Randolph & The Family Band's "Ain't Nothing Wrong With That." (I say tried because the song sounded a bit fuzzy.) Then, at tonight's NBA All-star Game, I heard KT Tunstall's "Come On, Get In" while they were cutting to a commercial.

That one's all over the place. Basically it subs in for any bumper or ad space that would have used "Hold On" or "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" a few years ago. I like the song, but it's a bit of an obvious retread.

I know Kanye is popular but it still seems pointless to have artists who use profanity to perform live for sports halftime shows. He performed at the NBA all star game halftime show on Sunday and TNT had to keep hitting the delay button.

Kanye's secured a unique spot for himself in music history. He's the only artist I can think of who has prompted the President of the United States to use profanity to describe him.

I don't usually go to Kohl's, but today I went there, and I heard something that sounded like it might be a Tim Myers song. (I looked it up when I got home; it is "Technicolor".) I had seen him and a bunch of other artists play at the Hotel Cafe in 2007. apparently he has had several songs featured in quite a few tv shows and commercials since then, but I haven't seen them.

I know some of you guys like The National. I just read that they've contributed some music for the game Portal 2, which releases next week. If it's anywhere near the caliber of the song Jonathan Coulton wrote to close the first game, it should be awesome.

The aforementioned song by The National, "Exile Vilify". I finally found it in the game today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaMEIuTxfwMI also heard Over the Rhine's "Days Like This" in tonight's episode of Brothers & Sisters. I was so surprised by this that I missed several lines of dialogue, being too busy enjoying the song and all. (I think the same show used Born once, but it's even more surprising to hear them turn up on TV now that they're indie.)

I keep hearing Mumford and Sons' "The Cave" on commercials for the Barclays Premier League on ESPN.
A few days ago, Mike & Mike on ESPN radio started a segment with Flogging Molly's "Don't Shut 'Em Down."

Evanescence's "Bring Me to Life" in this week's The Office. It was to Will Ferrell's character what Europe's "The Final Countdown" was to Will Arnett's character in Arrested Development.

I figure none of them are going to beat my iPod when it comes to entertainment options. (Except for the whole takeoff and landing issue, because you know, I'd hate to crash the plane by playing Angry Birds at the wrong moment!)

My wife was watching a random PBS documentary about the history of America's national parks the other day, and I could swear a lot of the incidental music sounded familiar. I finally realized that they were using a few Peter Bradley Adams songs with the vocals stripped out. That became distracting when they were talking about remote, rugged roads through places like Montana and Wyoming, and I knew the title of the song in the background was actually "Los Angeles".

I was driving behind a car the other day that had a Tool license plate holder, which in and of itself wouldn't be terribly rare, but the actual license plate said "LATERLS". Now that's some dedication!

We're visiting my wife's friends in Montana. They have four young kids, so naturally we ended up watching VeggieTales. The episode was "The Wizard of Ha's". Much to my surprise, the end song was done by none other than Andrew Peterson, who, as it turns out, also composed that episode's "silly song" with Randall Googdame.

The other day, while driving through Glacier National Park, my wife thought it would be appropriate to listen to Grizzly Bear (that being the animal whose presence kept us from venturing too far on the park's trails and all). That's not a random music sighting, since it was on my iPod. But a few hours later, when we were eating lunch in a rustic-looking lodge just outside the park, they were playing that exact same Grizzly Bear album.

so I was looking at the rock and roll hall of fame nominees and it still blows my mind/pisses me off that Rush is still not in the RRHoF. It's a shame that someone like Joan Jett, Guns n Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a few others would get in before Rush.

Whoever's in charge of these things probably emphasizes sex appeal/swagger over technical proficiency. Just a guess.
